There is nothing like the excitement of booking your first Disney Cruise! Who am I kidding, it’s just as exciting booking ANY Disney cruise because I promise you WILL be hooked after your first one! My family loves to cruise, and while we had cruised before on other lines multiple times, we got to experience the magic of a Disney Cruise for the first time last year. One of the big standouts for us is that Disney has made an app specifically with their cruising guests in mind, the Disney’s Navigator App. This app is easily downloaded to any smartphone, and will help keep you in touch and up-to-date with your cruise before you ever leave home and while you are on the ship. I like to think of this app as a little dose of pixie dust for busy families that don’t want to miss a thing while on the cruise!
Now, you may be wondering why this is such a big deal if you have used the My Disney Experience app before, but for the cruising industry, it is huge to have a functioning app to help cruisers plan. Let’s talk about the various features of the app that will get your family excited and help soothe your nerves if you aren’t quite sure what to expect on a Disney Cruise.
One small piece of the Navigator app that my family loves is the countdown clock! You just plug in your cruise date to the app and you get the excitement of counting down till sailaway! As you can see, our next one is only a mere 261 days away…
When You Board
When you board your Disney cruise, that is when the Navigator app truly comes to life. You will be able to access ship deck plans, dining menus, live entertainment times, character meet and greet location information, youth activities, information about port-of-calls, and the all important drink-of-the-day all with a touch of your finger! It’s really nice to be able to see dining menus several days in advance, especially if you want to book a Palo or Remy reservation, but don’t want to miss your favorite meal in the main dining room. Also, when you are looking at various activities and live entertainment there is a description of what to expect. Our family found this super convenient, because while we still carried around the hard copy version of the Navigator that was left in our stateroom, we loved having access to the app was so because it seemed like we always managed to get out hard copy wet from being around the pool or it would go missing after our kiddos were finished looking at it. You can also set the app to alert you when a specific event that you want to attend is coming up.
The other great piece of this app is that it addition to being able to keep up with all the going-ons of ship life, it also is home to an on-board messaging feature that makes it easy to “chat” with the friends and family while onboard the ship! It works very much like text messaging, and is provided complimentary with your cruise fare, so you do not have to use any of your cellphone’s data. There is a group chat feature so you can meet up with friends, or you can send individual messages. It also has a permission feature so you can control what you child has access to within the app. One thing to remember though- the onboard chat is for ship use only, so it will not work at your various port-of calls and Castaway Cay. It’s really great to be able to stay in touch with your group!
