Crowds In April

Refurbishments and Closures

It’s never fun to plan a trip to Disney World and then find out your favorite attraction is undergoing refurbishments. While there is still a ton to do, it’s still nice to have a backup plan. From attractions to dining to the resorts, if there are any refurbishments going on, we will list it here.

Please note that our information comes straight from Disney and sometimes this information will change daily. We do our best to keep it updated.

Disneyland and California Adventure offer so many new experiences for runDisney fans it would be a shame if you were to miss these great opportunities. These are reasons unique to Disneyland. My list may surprise you! Number 3 is my favorite so far.

5. California Sunrise

Ok, ok, if you live in California this isn’t “new”, but seriously there is something beautiful about a California sunrise. The colors are just different. It must be something in the air. We all know Disney’s footprint in CA isn’t nearly as large as central Florida. So while running this beautiful 13.1 mile course, you can plan to see other parts of Anaheim. And if you hit it just right you can view the most stunning sunrise you’ve likely ever seen. Yes, you are running when the sun comes up in Florida, but it has never been memorable. I mean, it was so pretty I stopped mid run and took a picture of it!!! runDisney couldn’t have planed it better; it was a perfect combination of fun and running. Other things to look forward to are the cooler temperatures. The only downside I have heard is if the Santa Ana Winds are high sometimes, so expect the run to be breezy and down right cold at times.

4. Angel Stadium

When was the last time you ran inside a Major League Baseball Field? I don’t know about you but other than this NEVER!!! runDisney makes it happen. During the Disneyland Half we ran around the outer dirt track down the first base line, around home plate, and up third base to the outfield. In Walt Disney World during the marathon you run around the spring practice field…but there is no one there to cheer you. In Angel Stadium, the energy was out of this world!!! Oh and did I mention they called every runner’s name out over the com system as you crossed over “home” plate. Here is a small video of the cheering. How cool is that!!! A must do for sure.

3. The Local Support

Imagine running down the streets of Anaheim and for at least a mile there are cars lined down each side. From old collectibles to new hot rods. Even ones that almost had a personality of their own. It was unreal the amount of cars and people from the community that came to cheer and support the runners. Due to the run not being on property for the majority of the miles, Disney couldn’t provide their characters out on the course like in Walt Disney World. However, I found that runDisney does a great job of providing entertainment every mile despite the minor setbacks. There were dance troops, local running clubs, even people dressed up as storm troopers or other Cos Play groups.

2. Unique runDisney Photo Ops

So when you DO get to run through the two parks, you can stop and take pictures with characters or at other notable spots…like in front of the Mickey Ferris Wheel which was all lit up at night. The one thing that I did notice is that the characters didn’t have nearly the lines as they do in Disney World. Partially they are elevated or blockaded in a way where you couldn’t get to them. It didn’t stop our selfies!!! It helped with the flow of the runners because a crowd wasn’t stopped in one place blocking the pathway. If you have ever been to Disneyland, you know that things are a bit more narrow than at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. So this seemed to help. And I must add the backstage areas were full of surprises, so don’t forget to look around when you run through there!!!

1. A Sense of Calm

I will admit, I’ve only done 2 races in Disneyland. So I will have to compare to other races when I do more. However, it seemed for both the 10k and the Half that the early morning “hecticness” that I am accustomed to from Disney World wasn’t there. It helped that we could walk to the start line. We weren’t dependent on buses and didn’t have to wake up at 3 am to go stand in a holding areas. The sense of calm was certainly one of the biggest take aways I got from my experience. I won’t change my Disney World experience for anything, but it is nice to have a different feeling on the West Coast. Something always to look forward to next time I venture out that way.

So let me ask you… Have you done a Coast to Coast race? Have you done a race at Disneyland and Disney World? What did you pick out that was different enough to stand out? Continue this discussion or discuss other Disney specific topics on Disney Express Lane Facebook page.

Adrienne from @DisneyTripsandSips took us on a tour of the B-Resort & Spa and I am so glad she did! Take a peek at B Resort and Spa Close To Disney Springs In Disney World!

Location

Location is everything! The B-Resort & Resort is not technically on Walt Disney World property, but it is apart of the Disney Springs Resort Area Hotels. Guests at the resort can enjoy complimentary shuttle transportation to Disney Theme Parks, Disney Springs and Disney Water Parks. Disney Springs is also within easy walking distance of the hotel.

At B Resort & Spa you can also enjoy Extra Magic Hours like you would at Disney World Resort Hotels. So that is a big perk, if you cannot live without Extra Magic Hours!

This was your first runDisney experience AND half marathon, right?

Yes Ma’am it was!!

Was it everything you thought it was going to be?

Absolutely and more!!! We had a blast! Disney definitely makes it a FULL experience, not just a run.

What was the hardest part of the runDisney Star Wars: Dark Side 1/2 Marathon Weekend?

The hardest part of the half marathon was getting around all of the people on the course. There were a lot of people and at times the course was very narrow. Right when my legs started to get heavy, around the 10 mile mark, the scenery got an upgrade. We went through Hollywood Studios, the Boardwalk, and EPCOT. It made the last 3 miles bearable.

What was your favorite part of the Dark Side 1/2 Marathon Weekend?

My favorite part was all the jumbo trans that were up playing Star Wars movies. It helps we are huge Star Wars fans.

What was your LEAST favorite part?

GETTING UP SO EARLY!!! Oh my goodness. That and catching the bus so early to then wait on the start of the race was so hard!

What surprised you the most about runDisney?

How many people were there!!! 10,000 people running. WOW!!

Since this was your first 1/2 marathon, would you recommend runDisney to someone else thinking of making it their first?

Absolutely!!! runDisney makes it a whole experience not just a run. So it is for sure a “must” for your first run if you are a true Disney fan.

Would you do the Star Wars: Dark Side Half Marathon again or other runDisney events?

Absolutely! We are huge Star Wars fans and of course the experience was amazing. I am wanting to do another runDisney even if that tells you how much I loved it :-)!!!

Your favorite character spotting during the run?

The Ewoks!!! They aren’t your normal characters you see all the time and they were so cute!!!

If you could do anything different what would it be?

I wish I didn’t have to get up so early, but I don’t think I can change that sadly.

Did your kids have fun?

Oh my goodness, they had a blast! They loved watching Mama and Pop Pop cross the finish line. And my daughter loved participating in the 5k! She loved all the sights and characters.

If you could give one final piece of advice for a novice runDisney patron what would it be?

Be ready for a lot of waiting around before the actual race. I was not expecting so much waiting after the bus dropped us off. And be aware of how the coral system works. Although it was cool to watch all of the different start times, I was not aware of how it worked on that scale. Now I know what to expect. Fueling up BEFORE and AFTER the race is very important! Here’s HOW!

There you have it folks. Straight off of her first runDisney experience. Everyone’s first time running one is so different. Do you have a different experience. Please comment or share on our Facebook social Media site, Disney Express Lane.

We all make a pros and cons list when trying something new. Here is a short list of reasons why one should not participate in a runDisney race. Keep these in mind when you decide on any kind of race. Check out 5 Reasons NOT to Race with runDisney!

1) If You Are NOT a Morning Person

Due to logistics, the runDisney races are run at a fairly early time in the morning. And it is not really the start time that is the issue. It is the 3am wake up call that is the doozy. The runDisney race booklet clearly states that if you are staying at a Disney owned resort that you must be on a bus before 4am. With the amount of time I snooze my alarm and then add in how long it takes to get ready and wait in line to get on the bus, 3am seems to be the latest I can sleep and still make it in time that is comfortable for me. In general, be reasonable with your time in the park the day before, but sometimes it is hard to breakaway for an early bed time. I promise you it is worth it!!!

2) If You are a Spend Thrift

Most likely Disney may not even be on the radar if you hate to spend money in general. Add on the generous race registration fees and you have a healthy vacation. From $80 for the 5k to $330 for the 10k/half Challenges it can add up fast. Take it a step further for the Goofy at $365 and the Dopey at $560 and you’ve now entered a different dimension. And unlike most things Disney, you CANNOT put a down payment on the race. It is all due up front. The nice part is is that it is paid for up front so when the Disney vacation gets here it doesn’t feel like a sucker punch. However, can you do Disney on a budget? HECK YEAH. Can you do runDisney on a budget? Why yes you can. Just plan accordingly and you can have the best runDisney vacation.

3) If You Like a Lot of Race Swag

At the time of my first runDisney race we would not only get a race t-shirt but also a mesh drawstring backpack. I totally thought it was an awesome addition. Since then the bag was replaced with plastic sling bags that will double for race day storage. There was however a trade off. Over the years the t-shirts became gender specific and the medals made a huge improvement. So if that is where that money was spent I am totally ok with it. There are plenty of runs that give a race participant everything from socks to hats to gloves. Just don’t expect that from runDisney. Don’t be too dismayed, while at the expo there will be plenty of runDisney and race specific paraphernalia to purchase. Oh and if you are pin collector, you can pre-purchase the race specific runDisney trading pin when you register for that race. I wish I had started that with my first.

4) If You Hate Being Around Crowds

Again, most likely Disney is not on the top of your “to-do” list for vacations. Well I am here to tell you that the runDisney races aren’t too much better than the parks. runDisney does a much better job logistically handling the large crowds over some of the other large race options. The shorter races you are easily rubbing elbows with other runners most of the time. There are parts that open up on the roads that allows you to spread out. You will find this a welcomed relief from the Toe to Toe feeling you get off and on in the run. Realistically, there are just as many areas where the course narrows as they open. Just be prepared. You’ll know it when you get there. Even if you like crowds it is easy to get overwhelmed. Just remember you are all out there to have fun.

5) If You Don’t Expect to Wait for Character Pictures

Once people caught on that you can stop and snap a pic with the characters, the lines grew. So did the strict cut off and the balloon ladies. Yes if a runner gets passed by the balloon ladies they will get swept off the course. This is a whole other topic, but keep in mind that there is a time limit on the course. Try strategizing stops. Cause as much as taking a picture with a favorite character sounds appealing, finishing in a timely manner is important. Just like in the parks the characters rotate. Try this strategy: “If I see the villains” I will stop and wait. If taking a picture is top priority in general if there are 5 people or less waiting..STOP. That is a super short line and it won’t take a big chunk out of your time. Create your own strategy just keep the time in mind.

It can be challenging to fuel your body properly before and after a race. This is especially true when you are visiting Walt Disney World for a runDisney race. Sometimes how you eat and drink before a race can make or break it. Ultimately you need to BE SMART!!! You know your body better than anyone else. Do what makes you comfortable. If you don’t like to leave things to chance then plan ahead, which you probably already have done for the most part. Keep it simple!!!

I ran my very first marathon at Disney. I have a very sensitive tummy so I was very particular of what I ate the 2 days before the race. Not only did I choose a smaller park to visit the day before but I scoped out the menus of our restaurants we had reservations to. There was also a strategy of where we ate and when. Now the more I have run long distance races, the more comfortable I’ve gotten leaving my comfortable food box. So lets get to some ideas.

Pre-Race

Lunch the day before the race is actually the most important meal I’ve found. The pre race nerves haven’t set in yet. Plus your body will have a tendency to digest that better than dinner. My favorite parks are Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios. They are small and I tend to go at a much more leisurely pace. Plus when you visit Animal Kingdom you are more inclined to go back to your resort after the part closes. But these are a few of my personal choices.

Magic Kingdom:

Cosmic Ray’s Starlight Cafe serves my absolutely most dependable easily digestible meal…Rotisserie Chicken, Mashed Potatoes, and Green Beans. Yes I know what you are thinking. Well stop and give it a chance.

Animal Kingdom:

Harambe Market has the most delectable grilled chicken skewer. Frankly I could do that for dinner and something heavier for dinner from say Yak and Yeti. If you like fish and are eating at Yak and Yeti Restaurant then the Salmon with rice is so great. It’s light and flavorful and won’t weigh down your body for the run.

Oh and HYDRATE, HYDRATE, HYDRATE!!! Any place that is a counter service can give you a glass of water for free. So no sense becoming dehydrated on your run. Oh! Save those celebratory adult beverages till after your race!!! What a nice reward.

Race Morning:

I’m a huge fan of packing your own food for the morning of. But planing ahead is key because it will be really really early in the morning when you wake up. Check your race guide and your resort to see if they have any open the morning of the race. You never know and it never hurts to ask.

Post Race

runDisney provides you with a box of yummies after you walk through the finisher’s shoot. It’s contents change every race I’ve done, but can have anything from crackers to yummies to cheese. Of course grab yourself a couple of waters and powerade before you walk away. You’re going to need that as you head back to your resort. It’s really important to replenish all that fuel your burned and water you lost. Central Florida can get hot and humid it is vital to stay on top of your hydration. When you get back to your room you should have some sort of protein/carb balanced snack to nosh on. I tend to snack on nuts and cheese/crackers.

Favorite runDisney Post Race Snacks

Dole Whip

Pickle

Ghirardelli Ice Cream

Mickey Bar

Turkey Leg

Grand Marnier Slushi from France

Via Napoli Pizza

Pot Roast Mac n Cheese

There you have it. Some ideas on how to fuel properly while on vacation in Disney World for your runDisney race. Really it is a matter of being prepared and be smart.

Here is a list of a few of my favorite run items that have helped training for or while running a runDisney race! These items are great gift ideas for that runDisney fan in your family. In the end maybe you’ll be ready to lace up your running shoes and hit the road.

Hand Held Water Bottle

So one of my biggest issues I had starting is that I wouldn’t stay hydrated enough while training. The end result was poor results. Plus my body didn’t know how to handle the water I would try to consume while running. Having a hand held water bottle while you train is a great way to insure that you have water on you at all times. I live in the south and yes I carry it with me even on short runs…you just never know. I also like it cause I can carry any nutrition in the holder and my car key. Most courses have water stops so carrying it during the race is a personal choice. You just need to make sure you stay hydrated at each station (HINT: taking a few sips every station versus gulps or a whole cup will keep the sloshing noise down). My current choice of hand held water bottle is the Ultimate Direction Clutch. This is a collapsible bottle so it is easy to grab and the Jenny Collection comes with a rescue Hair Band in the storage area! Hit up your local running store for different options too.

Reflective Gear

I’m a firm believer in staying safe while running. During the winter here in the south if you run before work or after work, well it’s dark. It’s not just bright colored running clothing. The best way to make sure that cars can see you is wearing reflective gear and lights. If the car can’t see you they can’t avoid you. I never run in the dark without my NoxGear Tracer360. They even make one for your four legged running partner. Nathan’s and Amphipod make great alternatives.

Waterproof Phone Case

Running with your phone is so common these days to track your mileage or for safety reasons. There are a plethora of waterproof phone cases available on the market to keep your phone safe. Or maybe you are lucky enough to own the new water resistant iPhone 7 or Galaxy S7. Either way when you carry your phone with you, you will need it protected. Plus when you are out running a runDisney race you can take some killer selfies with those characters on the course and of course locate your loved ones afterwards!!!

A Running Belt

There are only pockets on your shorts or tights to hold all that one wants on a run. What better solve than a running belt. This like anything else is what you like. My favorite belt is the Flip Belt. It doesn’t bounce and easily holds my phone, chapstick, my key, nutrition during the run. Did I mention it doesn’t bounce? Sometimes it takes a couple of tries on different belts to find one you like, but once you do its hard to go back. I don’t wear mine all the time, but I always wear them during a runDisney run so I can have all my goodies at hand. It’s much easier to run hands free during races.

A Sparkle Skirt

What better way to stand out in the crowd or dress up for the part than with a sparkle skirt. Sparkle Athletic is where I have gotten my skirts from in the past. If you go to their blog they have all sorts of Disney specific costume ideas for runDisney races. They also have other accessories that match. There are a couple other companies out there that do similar skirts all it takes is a Google search. You never know someone in your home town may could make one for you. Nothing gets a smile or a complement like a sparkle skirt.

A GPS Tracker

From a Garmin, to a fitbit, to an Apple watch, there are so many options to choose from. But if you want to make any runner happy, give the gift of a GPS watch and watch them light up. Who doesn’t like to track their mileage or see how fast they are getting. Garmin is tried and true, but there are loyalists out there for many companies. If you want to compare different brands take a look at DC Rainmaker’s Blog. It is a very detailed breakdown of the options out there. Oh, and if your significant other already has one…UPGRADE!

Good Socks

Running socks are not just normal socks. They are particular to the event as well as the runner. If you don’t know where to start ask your local running store. I LOVE my Swiftwick socks. My sister likes Balega. My best friend likes Bomba socks. A good sock isn’t cheap. But if you love your feet they will love you back. Keep in mind after you run that half marathon or marathon in Disney World put on a pair of compression socks to keep the swelling down. And don’t worry if you think you look funny, you won’t be alone walking around WDW.

For Fun: New Balance runDisney edition

For the past couple of years runDisney has partnered with New Balance to bring you Disney inspired kicks. Each year they come up with some new ones for you to purchase. The only catch is that they are exclusive for runDisney events for purchase. So even if you are in Orlando or Anaheim for fun while a runDisney expo is going on you can go online and make an appointment to try on the shoes available. I haven’t tried to do this yet as my foot and New Balance aren’t the best of friends, but as their designs change I have the urge to purchase some for just kicking around Disney World. Take a look at the 2016 kicks here.

So what are your “go to” items when you runDisney?

Listen up, runDisney fans! 2016 has been a great year for runDisney! runDisney Enhancements Made to Improve Your Experience will clue you in on all the fun and exciting changes this year that will add to the overall experience for us runners.

runDisney Enhancements Made to Improve Your Experience

runDisney Spotify Training Playlists

One of the coolest new additions to the runDisney experience is when they teamed up with Walt Disney Records. What they have done is create run specific training lists on Spotify. Training for the up and coming Wine and Dine Half marathon? There is a playlist for that!!! How about the Disneyland Super Hero Half Marathon? There is a specific Spotify list for that run too! There is nothing better than listening to Disney music while running. Just remember to be safe out there on the roads if you do.

New Races and Challenges

One of the biggest changes was the Wine and Dine Half Marathon moving from an evening run to a morning run. It certainly doesn’t have the same zing as trying to do an evening run, but should still be just as fun. Here is a list of new runs and challenges for this year in case you missed it:

Star Wars Half Marathon: The Dark Side (Located in Disney World)

Disneyland Paris Half Marathon

Kessel Run Challenge (Star Wars Light Side and Dark Side Half Marathons)

Castle to Chateau Medal (Any half marathon state side and Disneyland Paris half marathon in same year)

Wine and Dine 10k

Lumiere’s 2 Course Challenge (Wine and Dine 10k and Half Marathon)

I don’t know about you all, but on my list of runs is trying to do the Kessel Run in 12 Parsecs.

5k Medals

5K medals are now…metal. Previously the 5k medal was a rubber-like material. They were super cute, but not very exciting in the world of medals. Seeing how runDisney puts out some of the most unusual, but unique and exciting medals, it was just a matter of time before the 5k medal changed. The kid races still have the rubber medals, but that choice makes more sense. The rubber material will likely keep your kiddos comfy after their races, instead of a heavier medal. 5k races aren’t really my thing, but it is a great beginners distance. If you are getting started or love a 5k, what better way to commemorate the accomplishment than with a cool medal from runDisney?!

Costume Rules

While dressing up is completely acceptable, it is also welcomed while running. However, costumes were getting out of control. Like full-sized Death Stars and large E-Tickets. I completely commend this creativity, because I am not one of those creative people. However, large obstructive costumes just aren’t safe for the runner or the other runners around you. This year they adapted the costume rules to fit closer with those of Disney Parks. If you are interested in the details, there is a section you can read when you register or you can click HERE.

I think the main point is that if it interferes with your or other runners safety its a NO NO. So leave your Jedi robes, your full length princess dresses, and self surrounding X-Wing fighters at home. Do pack your themed t-shirts, your tutus, and tiaras. Disney-bound away!!! NOTE: if you do dress up for the run and are over 14 years of age, you will not be admitted into the park until you change.

Race Photos and Photopass

A few select races this year have been chosen to integrate the race photos on course and My Disney Experience Photopass. While I believe it is still in a trial period this would be HUGE and EXCITING, especially if it becomes standard at all races. Out of all the races I personally have run, I’ve only looked at my photos one time. This will not only help increase the sale of the photos but will help with the lines. The lines for characters have gotten out of control as most people will run with a camera/phone. With this implementation of Photopass options, you no longer have to run with a camera. I wouldn’t be surprised if they only let their specific photographers take the photos at each character. This would speed up the wait for them while on the run.

Virtual Running Shorts Series

This summer runDisney added a unique opportunity to runDisney without traveling to the parks to do so. With the addition of the virtual running shorts series, participants can register for THREE different virtual runs. So instead of traveling to Disney parks to compete, you can complete your 3.1 miles when you can, where you can. Each medal is unique. There are Mickey shoes, red pants, or his white gloves, Do all three and get a 4th medal that features the main man himself: Mickey Mouse. It’s a great way to bring the runDisney magic to you, even if you can’t make it to Disney World or Disneyland that year. I hope it sticks around into 2017.

2016 Changes for runDisney: A Review

All these changes are always to enhance the guest’s experience and I really think they do that. Overall I think each of the changes made every year really come from a ton of research and much discussion on runDisney’s part. Consider doing the survey’s runDisney because they gather so much information this way. What would you like to see runDisney add or change in 2017?

Join the Disney Express Lane Facebook Group to discuss this and other Disney related topics.

Are you planning on participating in a runDisney Experience soon? If so, here are the best Tips for a Great runDisney Experience in Disney World.

Tips for a great runDisney experience in Disney World

Everyone wants the same thing when they sign up and head to Disney World for a runDisney event: A great experience. After all, Disney is known for their ability to create a complete experience for their customers. The event crew does an outstanding job putting on these races as I have laid out before “5 reasons to love runDisney”. However, they can’t run the race for us or make us put on a happy face. So here are my Tips for a Great runDisney Experience in Disney World!!!

Train Properly

Once that credit card is charged and you are registered for the race, next on the agenda is a training plan. When you train properly the whole race and post race experience is just more enjoyable. Yes it may still hurt and your legs still may be sore afterwards, but trust me they will hurt WAY worse if you don’t prepare yourself properly. Trust me on this one. I have been that person that has waddled like a penguin through Magic Kingdom and had to get help getting off of the Rock’n Roller Coaster. Believe you me, it wasn’t pretty. I felt crummy too. This took away from me enjoying the parks like I normally would. If you don’t know where to start, runDisney has provided runners with a generic walk/run plan developed by former Olympian Jeff Galloway. Learn more about those plans HERE. Runner’s World has some generic plans you can download as well. Want something more personal? Go to your local running store and ask. You’d be surprised that there are certified run coaches out there. And they aren’t just for elite athletes.

The runDisney Expo Takes Time…Give Yourself Plenty

Once you get off the bus or park there is a little walk to get inside the ESPN World Wide of Sports center. It is crowded and busy, busy, busy. Don’t expect to get in and out in less than an hour. Just don’t. This is because you have to go to different buildings to get your things. You now get your bib in one place and then go to another building to get your swag/t-shirt/other vendors. Sometimes there are lines to get into these buildings due to the number of people trying to circulate through there. BE aware of any time constraints and just plan accordingly. Plus, you may find yourself wandering the runDisney booth or the other amazing vendors that are there. Also, note that if you take the bus from your resort they only return to resorts. There are no buses that will take you to a park.

Stay on Property

No, this isn’t necessary I admit that. However, if waking up at 2 or 3AM and getting in your car, sitting in traffic, parking, running, then fighting traffic leaving the event sounds like fun, then have at it. If you stay on property, transportation is provided to and from the expo and the run. Now the only difference is that most of the buses that work for runDisney are chartered. So there have been some instances where the buses have been delayed due to miscommunication or even gone a little off course to get to the run start. Even with those hiccups everyone made it, everyone ran, everyone who finished got a medal. So there is no reason to worry. Plus you get to visit with new friends and you never know who you’ll run into standing in line for your bus! All in all, it just can make your life easier if you stay on property.

Lay Your Running Gear Out the Night Before

This little helpful hint just will make those early mornings flow better. runDisney gives you a gear check bag and your number you can pack as a pre-race/post-race goodies. Go ahead and pack this too. Some of the items you may want to consider so you don’t have to think about it are: your running attire or costume, your bib, magic band (to get back in your room), and shoes with socks. Really anything you need for that morning just lay it out. Make it easy on yourself. I also pack an extra yummy because I will get hungry before the start as well as some water to sip on.

This is particularly geared to those staying at a WDW resort. Playing off the point above, one of the reason’s why buses get delayed or have issues are due to the time crunch runners can put themselves in. The guide instructs that you must be on the buses by 4 AM. I’m a rule follower so I mind that 4 AM rule or risk being left behind. If you stay at a larger value resort there are many more runners that the buses are picking up. So it is common to sit and wait for a while as you watch full bus after full bus go by. This is normal!!! So get to the bus pick up area early enough to give yourself a comfy leeway. I’d rather sit and wait at the race start than be the one fretting over if the bus is going to make it there in time. The deluxe hotels don’t have as many issues it seems with this and most have access to the monorail. After doing it both ways, the monorail was a great way to get to and from the run start/finish.

Restrooms

There are plenty of Porto-Potties at the gathering area before the run. One thing people don’t realize is that there are some near the start too. Because you normally have to walk a little bit to get to the start, they have placed some there for you to use as well. This wasn’t always the case. Many a time runners would be forced to use other facilities. There are port-o-potties at every water station which is close to every mile or so. Here is a pro tip*: when you are running through a park those restrooms are open too. The one in Tomorrowland tends to get backed up just to make you aware.

Be Patient

Be patient at the expo, be patient for the buses, be patient on the course. Just be patient. What faster way to ruin the experience than loosing your patience? There are thousands of people running these races. It is going to be busy and crowded. There is no way around this. If you know what to expect it just makes things better. Especially out on the run course. Many times the course narrows to a small one lane stretch of a road and it is elbow to elbow. Just be courteous of the runners around you. If you do a run/walk method, be mindful and signal and move off to the side during a walk. If you get caught behind a run/walker just be patient and run around them. This is not a PR scenario type course so prepare accordingly. Don’t let a bad mood ruin your run or day.

It goes without saying that we should all do this!!! Take in the sights and sounds. Gather as many free high fives as you can. Thank a cast member and a volunteer. Soak up the spectators cheering. Look everywhere cause you never know what kind of hidden Disney magic you’ll see!!!

Love to run? Why not enjoy both…at the same time. Here are the top 5 things to LOVE about runDisney: Logistics, Volunteers and Race Support, Character Spots and Unique Route, Medals, Family Friendly. runDisney really does cover it all. Maybe you will fall in love with runDisney as much as we have.

Logistics

First of all, it is to be expected that when you do a running race with Disney in the name that it will be run well. On the opposite side, for a large race you would think that things would feel a little bit clusterish. runDisney has this down to a science. The logistics have changed over the past 6 years for sure. All have improved the flow of both the expo and the race itself. When you arrive at the ESPN World Wide of Sports it can feel a bit overwhelming, but the staff and volunteers are more than happy to lead you in the right direction. The one thing that will make your life easier is to read through the virtual race packet. runDisney really does lay everything out in an easy to follow manual. The best advice is the part about how to use the transportation if you are staying on Disney property (bus or monorail) and cheer areas for family/friends. It lays out how to get to those areas along the course. It also estimates travel time so you don’t miss your person. So read your race packet!!!

Volunteers and Race Support

A good race is only as good as the volunteers. And Disney has some of the best. From water stops (includes sports drink too) to local entertainment you would be hard pressed to find a more supported race out there. One thing you can always count on when you runDisney are the amount of water stops. They are absolutely perfect. So whether you like to carry your water while you run or prefer to get liquid on the course it’s good to know the water stops are spaced out almost every 1-2 miles. So you are not going to run out of water or go thirsty. I will advise you to carry your own nutrition as there is only 1 station on the half marathon races to pick up a traditional gel and it is around mile 7-8ish. Then when you finish runDisney provides something to nosh on while you make your way back to your resort. Most of all PLEASE don’t forget to THANK your volunteers!!!

Characters and Unique runDisney Routes

There are some differences between the Disneyland races and the Disney World races. Despite their differences the one thing that holds true is the entertainment. Characters, Characters, Characters!!! Oh and some recognizable cast members. Some you can take pictures with (if you are willing to wait in line…yes there are lines during a running races). And some you cannot, but you can wave and enjoy as you go by (think Anna and Elsa…can you imagine the line for them?). My favorite part is running through the parks. When you do the Walt Disney World Marathon in January you get to run through all 4 parks + ESPN Wide World of Sports and see parts of Disney you didn’t even know they had. Did you know Disney World has their own the water treatment plant? From back stage areas, to running through Angel’s Stadium in Anaheim, to local classic car clubs you won’t care about the miles you’ve run. And nothing beats running down Main Street U.S.A towards Cinderella’s Castle with spectators cheering you on!!! Chills every time!!! Now you don’t even have to bring a camera as all character spots have official Disney photographers to snap your picture.

The Medals

Yes its been mentioned before but really the main reason some people run are the medals. And Disney doesn’t disappoint. Disney starting in 2011 really stepped up their game using their graphic artists to design specific. The medals for each race that are similar yet unique year to year. If you are lucky enough to race on an anniversary year, the medals are in color and are extra unique. Sometimes they spin other times they sparkle!!! And yes even the 5k finishers receive a medal. You don’t want to miss out on getting one of these amazing additions to your collection. Want to see an inside look at the design process? Take a look at this Disney Parks YouTube Video about the making the Star Wars Dark Side Medals!!

Family Friendly

As always Disney has found a way to insure everyone in the family is having fun. So if you have little ones that can’t quite run a 5k the Kids Races are the way to go! The distance is based on the age from crawlers to 8 year olds. And your biggest supporters can sign up and register for the ChEAr Squad at the Disney World races. They will receive a t-shirt and a special reserved spot to watch your loved one out on the course and finish and even a place to hang out before the race and get some food. There is a gold package and platinum package. The platinum has a character meet and greet and more. There is literally something for everyone.

Check out runDisney’s YouTube Channel for recaps of events. It is fun to relive those races…even if you haven’t participated.
