After having my daughter, I suffered from terrible motion sickness for years. I couldn’t sit in the backseat of a car or even help navigate from the passenger seat because looking down at my phone or a map in a moving car would make my head start to spin.

Even if you don’t regularly suffer from motion sickness, a day of rides in the hot sun (especially after indulging in a heavy meal or plenty of irresistible snacks) can cause many people to experience motion sickness.

Top 5 Tips For Avoiding Motion Sickness at Disney World

As with anything Disney, my biggest piece of advice is know before you go! Have a plan for how you will avoid motion sickness AND a plan for how you will deal with it if, despite your best efforts, you still end up feeling nauseous.

Here are some of my best tips to avoid motion sickness or at least deal with it the best you can:

1.  Know which rides might induce motion sickness and avoid those like the plague if you have ever lost your cookies on a ride before.  These rides are typically rides that go around and around (Teacups, I’m talking to you) or include a centrifuge (Hello Mission Space Orange).  See the full list below.
2. Pack Dramamine or some other type of motion sickness medicine and take the recommended dosage before you head to the parks for the day.  For some people, this is enough to help them cope and still enjoy the rides their children love.  If you have a child who suffers from motion sickness, talk to your pediatrician about ways to help them cope.
3. When selecting your seats, opt for center seats or center cars whenever possible. You’ll experience less motion than if you’re in the side seats – and definitely avoid the first and final cars for any roller coaster ride.
4. Pack Pepsi, lime, and peppermint.  For some reason, Pepsi (not Coca-Cola) with a squeeze of lime seems to really help ease a queasy stomach.  I’ve used it as an anti-nausea remedy for ages and my family swears by it.  Peppermint is also great and when I was extremely sick and pregnant with my children I swore by jolly ranchers and other hard candy, which kept me from constantly dealing with the metallic taste you get when you feel queasy.
5. If you do happen to get sick to your stomach, find a cool bathroom so that you can wash your face and recoup.  Then, I recommend finding a cool area and resting for a while. Now would be a good time to break out some more of those peppermints.
6. Don’t go on rides after a big meal or even heavy snacks – but also avoid going on rides with an empty stomach.
7. And whatever you do, don’t get back on another ride that will have you weak in the knees… at least for a few hours.
8. If you do find yourself feeling sick on a ride, one thing I do that helps is close my eyes and take deep breaths in through my mouth and out through my nose. Other people find it better to focus their eyes on something directly in front of them that won’t move.

Here is a list of Disney World Rides to Avoid If You Already Have Motion Sickness

Magic Kingdom

• Mad Tea Party: They should supply barf bags for this one…it’s bad.
• Dumbo: these are slow, but my husband usually sits this one out.
• Astro Orbiter: This one is bad for people with a fear of heights and for those who deal with motion sickness. Read more about this ride in our ride review HERE.
• Prince Charming Regal Carousel: This one isn’t so bad because it is slow, but some people are very sensitive to any circular motion.
• Space Mountain: This one can be rough and there is quite a bit of circular movement to it, plus it’s in the dark.
• Big Thunder Mountain: same as Space Mountain but you can at least prepare yourself for the twists and turns. Read more about this ride in our ride review HERE.

Epcot

• Mission Space Orange: This one is a puke fest.  They literally supply barf bags on this one, which should be a VERY clear sign that this is a no-no if you have a weak constitution.  There is a green version of this ride that isn’t so intense, but my husband says it’s still pretty rough.
• Test Track: This is one to avoid immediately after a big meal.  It’s not bad on motion sickness, but can really jostle you around.
• Soarin: This is a simulator ride and simulator rides tend to really bother people who deal with motion sickness.  This one passes muster with my hubby, but proceed with caution.
• Remy’s Adventure: think of it like a bumper car with simulations. You’ll be jerked back and forth, moved at different paces through the ride, and have 3D effects bouncing around in from of you. If the description alone makes you feel queasy, skip it.

Hollywood Studios

• Star Tours: This is a family favorite but it is a simulator and it will make you sick if you are sensitive to them. Luckily, most do fine with Rise of the Resistance so you can still get a Star Wars ride in on your trip.
• Toy Story Midway Mania: This one may have you scratching your head, because it’s a kiddie ride.  Don’t be so quick to judge though, because this ride will toss you around a good bit as you transition from one screen to another.  Do not eat a massive cupcake before getting on this ride.  You have been warned.
• Rock N’ Roller Coaster: I love riding on this stretch limo with Aerosmith and singing my lungs out and screaming, but those two things and a ride that shoots you out like a slingshot really don’t go well with a full tummy.  Proceed with caution on this one too.
• Tower of Terror: Whew, this one makes me queasy just standing in line.  There is nothing like getting on a ride that drops you and then pulls you back up to drop you again.  Talk about taking your tummy!  Don’t say I didn’t warn you on this one.

Animal Kingdom

• Primeval Whirl: The Disney loving friends in my circle have deemed this ride the Primeval Hurl.  Do with that what you will…Read more about this ride HERE.
• Triceratops Spin: This ride is just like Dumbo, so if you can handle Dumbo, go for it! Read more about this ride HERE.
• Expedition Everest: This one goes backwards, which really messes with some people.  However, most people that like roller coasters do fine with this ride.
• Kilimanjaro Safari: This one is just really bumpy, so it typically isn’t a problem for most people. Read more about this ride HERE.
• Dinosaur: This ride is also really bumpy and has a pretty big scare at the end.
• Flight of Passage: this one has people divided – it has a gentle, gliding motion but it does have a simulator aspect which can make some queasy.

One of the questions I’m asked most often is: What age is best for taking kids to a Disney Park? Although I don’t know the perfect age, I do know my husband and I have taken our three kids on lots of trips since they were babies. Our twin boys went for the first time as infants and are now 6 years old and have been a total of A LOT! Some may call us crazy, and we may be. But, I do know we enjoy it and our kids always enjoy it even more. So with that being said, we have gathered up the “must dos” for preschoolers in every park at Disney World! This will help you make a master plan or itinerary for your upcoming Disney Vacation with your favorite preschooler! Your junior princess or pirate will absolutely adore these ride and attractions. So in no particular order, here are our favorites (and must-do’s on EVERY trip-foru our family)…

Walt Disney World Must Dos: For The Little Ones

Magic Kingdom

• Enchanted Tales with Belle: Let Belle capture their attention with mesmerizing tales of her life with the Beast!
• Peter Pan’s Flight: Come on, what kid (or adult, ME, ME) wouldn’t love this! They can fly!
• Princess Fairytale Hall: Your little ones can visit and meet their favorite princesses! What a fairytale!
• Mickey Mouse at Town Square Theatre: Meet your favorite Mouse and take a pic to mark the occasion.
• Country Bear Jamboree: Your child will love the knee slappin’ good ol’ time with this sing along bear musical.
• Dumbo the Flying Elephant: Who wouldn’t want to ride this cutie? While you wait your kids can play in a play area, so you don’t even feel like you are waiting in line!
• It’s a Small World: Enjoy a relaxing boat ride through different countries. You won’t be able to get that song out of your head! You’re welcome!

• Walt Disney World Railroad: This isn’t really a ride but it has four stops in the Magic Kingdom Park. Make sure you take a ride on it at least once. Little boys and trains are always a hit!
• Prince Charming Regal Carousel: Ride like a Prince or Princess aboard a carousel horse inspired by Disney’s Cinderella.
• Under the Sea-Journey of the Little Mermaid: Do you have a Little Mermaid fan? This attraction is for you! Located in the new Fantasyland.

Epcot

• The Seas with Nemo and Friends: Take a trip with Nemo and his friends on this fun, low key ride.
• Turtle Talk with Crush: Dude, sit around Crush’s tank and have a chat. He’s totally cool, Dude!
• Journey into Imagination with Figment: Figment takes you on a ride through your mind of imagination.
• Epcot Character Spot: The name says it all. See all of your favorite characters in one spot!
• Gran Fiesta Tour Starring The Three Caballeros: Take a low key boat ride through Mexico with the The Three Caballeros.

• Frozen Ever After: In Norway, take a relaxing boat ride featuring everyone’s favorite snowman!

Hollywood Studios

• Disney Junior Live on Stage: Do you have a Disney Junior fan? If so, this is the show for you. Go with all of your favorite Disney Junior puppets characters into a magical interactive story and show.
• Toy Story Mania: This interactive 3D ride brings all of the Toy Story characters to life.

• Voyage of the Little Mermaid: This show takes you under the sea with Ariel and all of her friends.
• Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage: Capture the magic of the movie live on stage.
• Muppet Vision 3D: If you have a Muppet fan on your hands this is the perfect show for you!
• Alien Swirling Saucers: This new attraction is found in Toy Story Land-Hollywood Studios’ newest addition!

Animal Kingdom

• Kilimanjaro Safari: Take a ride on a rugged safari vehicle and take in all of the breathtaking sights and sounds of the African savanna.
• Finding Nemo the Musical: Capture the movie in this must see musical!

• Triceratops Spin: Take a spin on one of these dinos!
• Affection Section: Pet, feed and love on the cutest animals around on Rafiki’s Planet Watch.
• Maharajah Jungle Trek: Take a self-guided tour through this zoo-like adventure. Look at all of the exotic animals!
• Na’vi River Journey: Think… It’s a Small World in the World of Avatar. This easy boat ride anyone will love with all of the bright and vibrant colors.
• The Boneyard: Young paleontologists ages 10 and under can participate in prehistoric discoveries and learn more about the extraordinary world of dinosaurs.

I hope this list will help you and your preschooler have a magical time at Walt Disney World! I know it has mine! 4 Thoughts On It’s a Small World in Fantasyland

So let’s get started with the facts. It’s a Small World is located in the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World and the original It’s a Small World is located in Disneyland. The ride is approximately 10-15 minutes long, depending on which park you are visiting. Seven continents are represented in this fun attraction.

First Thought

Don’t waste a fast pass. If you want to ride it over and over again without any wait, go for it then. But, honestly if you do have to wait on this ride at all, the wait is usually very minimal comparatively to some of its neighboring attractions.

Second Thought

If the theme song drives you nuts, don’t go on this ride! Do I need to elaborate? You WILL be singing it ALL DAY LONG!

Third Thought

This is a great ride for you to get out of the weather. It’s a great place to cool off from the hot temps or dry off from the rain.

Forth and Final Thought

This attraction is great for the little ones. I know you are saying: Duh, Mandi, you are stating the obvious! And yes, I am! This ride is a classic and this is a ride they will remember for years to come. I know I do! The memories are endless on this ride while going to Disney World as a child. This was one of my favorites and is now my children’s. (Keep in mind: Not all kids love this ride though. if they are weirded out by puppets, this ride will not be for them.)

The Electrical Water Pageant At Magic Kingdom

This is a magical display of lights that travels from the Seven Seas Lagoon to Bay Lake. Check out the times of showings before you make plans! 

Main Street Phone Conversations

(In the past,) The Main Street Confectionery in the Magic Kingdom has an old phone on the wall inside. Pick it up, listen real carefully! There is an old conversation between, if I remember correctly, a mother and daughter. It takes you back to another time and place! It is truly magical! (We are not sure if this is still available! If you have done this experience let us know in our FB Group, Disney Express Lane. We would love to hear about your experience.)

Epcot’s World Showcase Hidden Gems

I have written a-many-of-articles about Epcot, I love Epcot! I couldn’t just pin down a couple of things, so I just threw in the whole thing!!!! The World Showcase may not be a hidden gem, but it has many hidden gems inside of it. I find something new every time we go. From watching all of the shows, street bands, performers and different foods each country has to offer, it is truly a hidden gem!

Find Divine in the Animal Kingdom

Divine is a street performer only found in Animal Kingdom. She is very easy to miss at times, she sometimes hides in the bushes and trees. But, when you do finally see her, you see her elegance and grace out shines them all. She is a stilt walker covered in vines and face paint that blends into the landscape around her. She usually has a crowd around her, so watch out for the crowd or you can grab a Times Guide at the front of the park for her performance times.

Watch The Fireworks From The Polynesian Or Grand Floridian Resorts

I know everyone likes to gather around the castle for the fireworks but, I know that is not for everyone. Although you do need to experience the fireworks from Main Street U.S.A. at least once, the Polynesian and the Grand Floridian hold a close candle to the actual castle fireworks. Try snagging a dining reservation at one of the fantastic restaurants that the Grand Floridian and the Polynesian have to offer, then head out to watch the fireworks when your belly is full and you are ready to relax.

Yehaa Bob at The River Roost at Port Orleans Riverside

This place is so much fun! Yehaa Bob puts on a great show while you sit and have a drink at the bar of Disney’s Port Orleans Resort – Riverside. You can hear him all around the lobby and gift shop area near by, which is great if you get there too late and can’t find a seat. Also, don’t worry about his performance not being G-rated since it is a watering hole. No need to worry at all, kids are more than welcome. They would actually enjoy it if they are awake! Watch a Disney Movie under the Stars

Most all of the resorts on WDW property have Movie Nights Under the Stars. This is always a hidden gem my daughter and I love. One time we were able to watch Secret of the Wings under the stars in January. It wasn’t too cold and definitely wasn’t hot. Perfect! Memory we will never forget! Check your resort for a movie schedule! 

The Sword In The Stone

This is pure magic! I mean, what kid (or grown-up) doesn’t want to be the ONE to pull the sword from the stone! This treat is usually done once a day in Fantasyland and sometimes a “show” will take place. It has been rumored that if you are the lucky one to pull the sword from the stone, a celebration treat is in order! Although this is not listed or advertised, you can find the sword and stone in front of Prince Charming’s Regal Carousel!

Those are just a few hidden gems I love and my list grows and changes almost every time I go to Walt Disney World, so I’m sure it’s not the last post I will write.

DISCLAIMER: I generally always have a video to accompany my blogs but not so with Soarin’ Around the World. Disney is very strict about no videography or photography during this experience and well, I’m a rule follower. Honestly, even if I had a video of Soarin’ Around the World it would not do it justice. This is a ride you definitely need to experience in person. So there, I just gave you a great excuse to book your next Disney World vacation!

Location

You will find Soarin’ Around the World in The Land Pavilion at Epcot. After entering Epcot, head straight to Future World. You will want to go right at the water fountain walking past the Epcot Character Spot. Keep going straight and the path will lead you to The Land Pavilion. Stay to the right after entering the building and you will take the escalator or stairs down to the bottom level. The entrance to Soarin’ Around the World is on the left in the back. An elevator is also available to get to the lower level.

Tier 1 Attraction

Epcot’s attractions and experiences are categorized in two tiers. When reserving your FastPass+ selections, you will have to choose one attraction from the Tier 1 list and your other 2 FastPass+ selections from the Tier 2 list.

Soarin’ Around the World is in the Tier 1 attraction list at Epcot. If riding Soarin’ Around the World is a must for you, you will want to choose it as your Tier 1 attraction when making your FastPass+ reservations.

Soarin’ ReImagined

Soarin’ Over California was the original film of the attraction. You soared over California landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Napa Valley, Lake Tahoe, downtown Los Angeles and Disneyland in Anaheim.

Soarin’ closed in January 2016 for a major refurbishment. Not only was the attraction switching to a new film, it was also adding a third theater to hold more guests. Soarin’ reopened Memorial Day weekend of 2016 with the original film and switched to the new film June 17, 2016. The third theater made the stand-by and FastPass queues flow much better.

Queue

The queue for Soarin’ Around the World is very similar to a concourse at the airport. However this concourse is Disney-fied to help you pass the time. If you are waiting in the stand-by queue to board Soarin’ Around the World, you can play the new game, Soarin’ Challenge. What exactly is Soarin’ Challenge? It’s a trivia game that will test your familiarity with global travel. Disney’s website says “answer questions on culture, cuisine, history, landmarks and more”. It’s very simple to play. Team up with your family and friends, grab a mobile device and head to the Soarin’ Challenge website.

The Ride

Once you arrive at the “gate”, you will make your way to a small area where guests will be put into lines to prepare to board Soarin’. In this area, you will receive a safety message from the Captain via a monitor.

After the safety message, you will be led to your flight seats. There is a netted compartment underneath each seat to store any loose items and your shoes if you are wearing sandals that could possibly fall off during the flight. Once you are done putting your items in the compartment, you can be seated. The seat belt simple pulls across your lap and latches. There is a mark on each seat. If you do not reach that mark by height, you will need to put your seat belt through the loop as an added safety measure.

Once everyone is seated and the flight attendants check that everyone is secured correctly it is time for take off! Your seats will swing up into position and you feel as though you are suspended in air with your legs dangling.

Soarin’ Around the World has an amazing itinerary for your trip. The locations visited in Soarin’ Around the World are Matterhorn in Switzlerland, Isfjord Greenland, Sydney Harbour in Australia, Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany, Kilimanjaro National Park in Tanzania, The Great Wall in China, The Great Pyramids in Egypt, Taj Mahal in India, West and East Mitten Buttes in Monument Valley Utah, Lau Islands Fiji, Iguazu Falls Argentina, Eiffel Tower in Paris and ending in Epcot at Disney World.

Tips

• FastPass+ is offered and recommended.
• Rider Switch is available.
• Soarin’ Around the World is extremely popular. Make sure you are awake and ready the morning your FastPass+ window opens!
• If you don’t grab a FastPass for Soarin’ Around the World you will want to be at Epcot at park opening and head straight for the queue!
• If you only have one Epcot day planned during your trip, I suggest making your FastPass for Test Track and waiting stand-by for Soarin’ Around the World. With the new theater added, the lines now move more quickly than before. If you do this, I do suggest getting to Soarin’ Around the World as quickly as possible after park opening to minimize your wait time.
• To get the full effect of Soarin’ Around the World, you will want to be in the front row of seats. This row will be at the very top when the seats are in the air. If you are on a subsequent row, there is a possibility of seeing people’s feet hanging from the row above you.
• Children less than 7 years old must be accompanied by someone 14 years or older.

Height Requirement

To experience Soarin’ Around the World you must be 40 inches or taller. You can check height restrictions for other attractions right HERE.

Accessibility & Other Information

You must transfer from wheelchair or ECV to board Soarin’ Around the World.

Video From Frozen Ever After At Epcot: A Disney World Review

Location

Frozen Ever After is located in Epcot at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. After entering Epcot you will need to go straight through Future World. When you get to the World Showcase you will want to go left. The first Pavilion is Mexico (you will definitely want to come back to the Mexico Pavilion to visit). The next Pavilion is Norway, which is where Frozen Ever After is located.

Tier 1 Attraction

Queue

The attraction queues at Disney World are always entertaining and the Frozen Ever After queue is no exception. You will feel as though you are walking through the streets of Arendelle. Prepare to also explore shops and other fun items from Arendelle as you make your way through the line.

You will certainly love the chance to see Oaken’s Tokens and Sauna along the queue. Don’t rush by the door as you may get a chance to see Oaken himself! When you get close to the docks, you will see a royal declaration inviting you to a Summer Snow Day Celebration.

The Ride

The Frozen WillowsFrozen Ever After is a boat-style ride much like it’s a small world, Living with the Land and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Your ride experience begins by boarding a boat at the docks of Arendelle. Your boat first takes you through the frozen willow forest. This is the beautiful scene from the movie where the Willow branches are frozen and chime as Anna, Kristoff and Sven walk through them. It’s also where they first meet up with Olaf!

The Trolls

Next you will encounter Kristoff’s family, the Trolls. They are sharing the story of the sisters with the younger trolls. They tell them how Anna was frozen and Elsa’s act of true love was the only thing that could thaw her frozen heart. From here, be sure to prepare for the cold of the North Mountain as Queen Elsa’s ice palace is just ahead. You’ll also pass by a few friends singing our favorite songs from the Frozen.

Elsa’s Ice Palace

You will enter Elsa’s ice palace where she is greeting you with the song we all know and love from Frozen, Let It Go! I know I did…I let it go and sang right along with her! It’s at this point your boat will stop, the back of the boat will move slightly to the right and the boat will begin to move backward. There is a small drop right after you begin moving backward.

Marshmallow the Giant Snow Monster

After exiting Elsa’s palace you’ll definitely want to keep an eye out for Marshmallow, the giant snow monster. This is one of my family’s favorite parts. No matter what movie we are watching, it’s the joke that I am always the bad guy or villain. When we ride Frozen Ever After, my youngest daughter loves to point to Marshmallow and say “that’s you mom” and giggle. During this scene, your boat will stop and begin moving forward facing.

After another small drop, you will return back to Arendelle. Go ahead and sing along as you pass by a few Frozen friends one last time before your boat docks.

Tips

• FastPass+ is offered and strongly recommended.
• Frozen Ever After is extremely popular. Make sure you are awake and ready the morning your FastPass+ window opens!
• If you don’t get a FastPass for Frozen Ever After, you will want to be at Epcot at park opening and head straight for the queue!
• There are areas of Frozen Ever After that are dark. If your child is sensitive to the dark, they could possibly not enjoy this ride.
• At one point of Frozen Ever After, your boat will stop and begin moving backward. While going backward you will also experience a small drop. If you are prone to motion sickness, you could possibly have an issue with this part of the ride. Click HERE to get some tips on how to avoid motion sickness at Disney World!
• There is a possibility of getting a little wet on Frozen Ever After. I have ridden it several times and the splashing is very minimal.
• After you exit Frozen Ever After, make sure to get in line at the Royal Sommerhus to meet both Elsa and Anna!

Height Requirement

There is not a height requirement for Frozen Ever After. No matter how small or tall, everyone in your party can enjoy this ride! You may want to hold very small children because of the small backwards drop.

You must transfer from your ECV or wheelchair to board Frozen Ever After.

Location

After entering Epcot, head straight under the “Epcot ball” that houses Spaceship Earth. Once you come to the beautiful water fountain in Future World, take a left. You will pass between an Innoventions building and the Mouse Gear shop. After passing these buildings, head to the right and Test Track will be straight ahead.

Tier 1 Attraction

Test Track is a Tier 1 attraction at Epcot. This refers to Disney’s Fastpass+ system in place. Attractions at Epcot are separated into two tiers for FastPass+ selections. You are allowed to choose one attraction from the Tier 1 list and two attractions from the Tier 2 list. If Test Track is a must for you, you will either want to choose it as your attraction from the Tier 1 list or be at Epcot at opening and head straight for the stand-by queue.

Queue

The queue for Test Track, like most Disney World attractions, is an experience in itself. With items on display that show the advancement in technology at Chevrolet, your wait time passes by a little more quickly!

You will come to a point within the queue where you will be asked your party size and then put in a holding area. Doors will open and you will enter the Chevrolet Design Center. Here, using touch screen monitors, you will design your very own virtual concept car. Your design will be based on four testing criteria; handling, maneuverability, efficiency and speed. The fun part comes when you add final touches to your design with color and some pretty neat decals!

If you are a car enthusiast, this ride and queue is definitely for you!

The Ride

Right before boarding your Test Track ride vehicle, you will want to scan your MagicBand to make sure your design is entered. As you pass through the various tests, there will be charts scoring how each design represented in your ride vehicle performed.

During the first test you will see how well your design handles different road surface conditions. With weather ever changing, this test takes you through a couple of sequences of extreme conditions. Aerodynamics (think handling) is also a part of the capability testing. Make sure you watch on either side of your ride vehicle to see exactly how the air moves over your car.

The next test is responsiveness and maneuverability. You will be taken up and down hills and around sharp curves to see just how well your virtual concept car handles the road. Watch out for that semi-truck on the left!

The final test is what everyone has waited for…power! You speed toward closed doors that open just in the nick of time. Once open, you are speeding outside around a 1-mile track. With banked curves and a long straightaway, it is here you will reach a speed of 65mph.

After Your Ride Experience

Don’t think that after hitting that speed of 65mph your experience is over. After exiting your ride vehicle, there are a few hands-on exhibits for you!

• See exactly how well your very own concept design scored during the test drive.
• Make a commercial, starring you, of your concept vehicle design and then email it to share with your friends.
• In a smaller test, steer your design through obstacles and varying conditions and terrain.
• Get a picture with your favorite Chevrolet and include your virtual design with a beautiful background.

Tips

• FastPass+ is available for Test Track and recommended.
• Test Track is a Tier 1 attraction at Epcot.
• Test Track offers Rider Switch for parties that have members that do not meet the height requirement or prefer not to ride.
• Children less than 7 years old must be accompanied by someone 14 years or older.

Height Requirement

You must be 40 inches or taller to ride Test Track. If someone in your party is less than 40 inches, they will not be allowed to ride.

Location

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is in the Frontierland section of Magic Kingdom. After entering Magic Kingdom, head straight down Main Street U.S.A. towards Cinderella Castle. Take the walkway at the left of the castle that takes you to Liberty Square. After passing over the bridge and past a few stores, head left. Follow that walkway to the end where you will see Splash Mountain. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is off to the right!

TIP: After entering Liberty Square, there is a small wooden pathway along the edge of the water that is less crowded than the main path. When you get to the end of this walkway, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is to your right.

The Queue

The queue for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad takes you through artifacts from Big Thunder Mining Company. As you are making your way through the queue, it looks as though you are walking through the abandoned mining offices. An excellent plus to the queue is there are several interactive props to help keep your children, and you, occupied during your wait!

The Story Behind the Ride

In the late 1800s, gold was discovered in the American Southwest and a mining community sprang up…Tumbleweed. Big Thunder Mining Company was established and work began. Mining was very successful and the company set up a large amount of mine trains to carry the ore from the mountain.

What the settlers of Tumbleweed didn’t know is that the mountain was a sacred place to the Native Americans and was cursed. With all of the mining destroying the mountain, a great tragedy came to Tumbleweed in the form of a flash flood. The town was then abandoned.

Legend is that some time later the trains were found running through the mountain on their own accord. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is now set up in the abandoned mining camp and invites tourists to experience this possessed mine train!

The Ride

Once you have made it to the loading area, you will board your very own mine train. To begin, you will pass through a bat infested tunnel. This tunnel is very loud and dark. If you have sensitive ears you may want to wear ear plugs.

You will ascend a hill and pass under a waterfall. Don’t worry, you will only get sprayed with a light mist. Once over the hill you drop to the left and the fun begins! Your train will twist and turn and wind its way through and around the flooded town of Tumbleweed. After you return to the loading station, you will exit to your right.

Overall, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is not what I would call a scary ride. It does go pretty fast but you do stay right side up…just hold on for a lot of fast twists and turns. My 11 year old daughter is fearful of roller coasters but Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is her favorite!

Height Requirement

You must be at least 40 inches to ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. If someone in your party is less than 40 inches tall, they will not be allowed to ride.

You must transfer from your wheelchair or ECV to board Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

• FastPass+ is offered and recommended for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.
• The best time to experience Big Thunder Mountain Railroad without using FastPass+ is at park opening.

• Big Thunder Mountain Railroad lasts about 7 minutes.
• Children under 7 years old must be accompanied by someone 14 years or older.
• If you have a child that isn’t quite tall enough for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and you are using Rider Switch, there is a small play area underneath the Walt Disney World Railroad tracks beside Splash Mountain that is a great place to wait while the rest of your party to enjoys the ride.

Location

Kilimanjaro Safaris is located in the Africa section of Animal Kingdom. After entering Animal Kingdom, head straight through The Oasis Exhibits and over the bridge (have your picture taken with a Disney PhotoPass Photographer). Take a left at Island Mercantile. You will pass Pizzafari on your left and Terra Treats on your right. You will walk over another bridge which takes you into Africa. Keep straight through Africa and you will come to Kilimanjaro Safaris.

The Queue

Kilimanjaro Safaris has a winding queue that is entirely covered. This is great if it begins to rain and also gets you out of the hot Florida sun for a bit. There are fans strategically placed that give you a little bit of relief.

You will notice televisions placed along the queue. They show information on some of the animals you will see on your expedition. This is a great way to learn more about these beautiful animals on busier days when the lines don’t move as quickly.

Your Safari Truck

Once you are at the loading area, you will be placed into lines to wait a few more minutes to board your expedition vehicle. You will board an open-air safari truck and begin your adventure. Make sure to pay attention to the animal index attached to the ceiling of the truck. All of the animals you can see on the safari are pictured here including their names.

The Safari

After you are on board, you take off on a guided tour of the African outback! Hang on because it’s a winding, bumpy ride! Your expedition will take you on a twenty minute ride through the savannah, streams, woodlands and rocky hills.

Your guide will help you keep an eye out for any animals along the way so make sure to pay attention. S/he will also give you great information about the land and its inhabitants.

The Animals

There are many animals for you to view while on your tour. You might spot a hippopotamus underneath the water of a small pond or a majestic lion lounging on a rock. Also watch for a giraffe feeding on a tall tree.

Other animals you may encounter are:

• Flamingo
• Gazelle
• Hyenas
• Okapis
• Ostrich

Beginning in mid-2016, you are able to experience Kilimanjaro Safaris at nighttime. In this new excursion, some of the animals are more active at night. Lighting is strategically placed to imitate the light from the setting sun and the rising moon! The nighttime safari is definitely something you don’t want to miss. If you have been on this ride numerous times during the day, this is a great opportunity to see new animals that were likely sleeping on your past trips.

Wild Africa Trek

If wildlife is your thing, but you can’t manage a trip to Africa for an authentic safari, you can upgrade your experience at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The Wild Africa Trek is a behind the scenes, 3 hour tour of Kilimanjaro Safaris. You will walk a path in the grasslands, cross a rope bridge over the crocodiles and ride a safari truck through the savannah. After working up an appetite during your adventure, you will be able to satisfy your grumbling tummy with African-inspired snacks.

The Wild Africa Trek is a privately priced tour that also requires a separate admission ticket to Animal Kingdom. Tips

• FastPass+ is offered for Kilimanjaro Safaris and is recommended. The wait time will grow as the day goes on.
• Children under 7 years old must be accompanied by someone 14 years or older.
• The animals are often most active first thing in the mornings or later in the afternoon.
• If you have back or neck problems or are pregnant, you should probably skip Kilimanjaro Safaris. There are many bumps along the ride.
• If you have a small child, you should place the child in between adults or older children. The bumps on this ride can really jostle the little ones.
• Always have your camera ready. There are many times the truck isn’t able to stop but just for a second, or not at all, to let you get that perfect picture of an animal. So always be ready!
• Since you can’t fully control animals, each time you ride Kilimanjaro Safaris is a different experience.

Height Requirement

There is not a height requirement for Kilimanjaro Safaris. No matter what age, or height, everyone in your party will be able to enjoy this attraction.
