6 Rookie Mistakes to Avoid at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

I’ve noticed over the years and from talking to people, that newbies miss out on so much! From not getting on some of the best rides to avoiding some really adorable shows. These are all just classic rookie mistakes that you may not realize you’re making. Here are some of the rookie mistakes that I personally hate to see happen.

6. Not Understanding the Rise of the Resistance Queue

Galaxy’s Edge is home to a lot of exciting things. One of the most sought-after attractions is Rise of the Resistance. The queue for this attraction is done entirely on your mobile device, through the My Disney Experience app. Currently, if you have a park reservation for Hollywood Studios, you can attempt to enter the queue at 7 a.m. the day of your reservation from anywhere, or at 1 p.m. from within the park. I’ve gotten into the virtual queue during my most recent visits by being on the app about 2 minutes before, and constantly refreshing the “join queue” page. This ride is completely worth it! Even if Star Wars isn’t your thing, this ride just shows how far Disney Imagineering has come.

5. Being Intimidated by Tower of Terror

A rookie mistake to avoid, this one being geared more towards the younger audience, is being scared of the big rides! Although the other parks have some huge rides, Hollywood Studios has some of the best that Disney has to offer. The Tower of Terror can be quite intimidating… I mean terror is in it’s name. It is so much more than your typical drop ride! There are so many variations of the ride that each time can be different. Rockin’ Roller Coaster is another ride that I’ve seen many people wait for, and then exit right before they get on. It’s always a fantastic choice and worth the wait!

4. Sleeping In

I’m not one to tell people to be there for rope drop. I did marry someone who thinks you have to do rope drop every single day, though. A rookie mistake to avoid is not taking advantage of rope drop at Hollywood Studios. Yes, you can get on Rise of the Resistance from the comfort of your bed, but Mickey’s Runaway Railroad is absolutely adorable and can have an insane wait time. Getting one of the major rides out of the way so early can really open up the rest of your day.

3. Skipping “Kiddie” Rides

Some of my favorite rides at Hollywood Studios are the ones geared towards the children. Mickey’s Runaway Railroad and the Frozen sing-along are super fun for all ages. The Railroad might have replaced a classic, but it is so well done, that I’m not even mad. I recommend the Frozen sing-along to everyone who I help plan, whether they have children or not. It’s just too cute to not give it a shot!

2. Not Doing Toy Story Mania

If you don’t know, I’m a very competitive person, and I’m completely obsessed with all arcade style rides at Disney. My favorite casual ride has been Toy Story Mania, since I first rode it all those years ago. A rookie mistake to avoid is not prepping those arms/wrist for speed and stamina. Accuracy doesn’t matter! All that matters is crushing the competition and getting the high score for your vehicle!

1. Skipping the Shopping

Hollywood Studios has some of the most unique stores. There is a jewelry store that we spend a little too much time in each trip. They also have a toy store, Star Wars store, and a Hollywood memorabilia store! If you find something you have to have, I recommend getting it in the park. You never know if Disney Springs will have the unique item, or if it will even be available a day later.

Disney World is full of so many different things to do, characters to experience, rides to ride and delicious places to dine! What happens though, if you have a young man in your group who feels like there is nothing in the parks for boys! Here are a few things that Boys At Disney World just LOVE!

Boys At Disney World

My son has mentioned in the past that he doesn’t like to do meet and greets with Princesses and he wants to go out and do “boy” stuff! I know, the HORROR! So here are four things that your little men might want to experience while in Disney World. Disney World is not just all princesses and fluff! Although the princesses are pretty awesome!

Magic Kingdom Faves

Pirates! The Pirates League is located in Magic Kingdom’s Adventureland and is just amazing! Your dude can be transformed into a very cool looking pirate, complete with pirate name and pirate’s booty! Once you get the look, bring him over to ride the Pirates of the Caribbean ride that’s right next to Pirate’s League. Pirate’s League recommends advance reservations 180 days out. Also the prices range from $18.95 for the minimal makeover to $99.95 for a full make-over.

Sword in the Stone! My son loves this one! I love taking pictures of him trying to pull the stone out. Who knows, maybe your little one will get the sword out! Mine hasn’t yet, but every trip he always stops and tries his best! 

Resort Fun

Arcades! I know I know, your at Disney World and you can visit an arcade anytime. If your little ones enjoy gaming, the Resorts all offer an arcade on property. It was a great spot to visit on our departure day while waiting for our Magical Express. Next time we will take advantage of it more during rainy times or days we decide to relax at our hotel. Playing some arcade games and then getting ice cream is every kids (boy or girl) idea of fun!

Hollywood Studios

Don’t forget to make it over to Galaxy’s Edge in Hollywood Studios, where your guys can ride the very entertaining Millennium Falcon:Smuggler’s Run, which takes six people onto the Millennium Falcon to deliver an important package. The ride is a little intense and everyone in the ride has a job to do in order to accomplish the mission. My son loved this ride. It is completely immersive and definitely worth the wait. If you are going after December 5th 2019 make sure to also try the new Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance!

Disney Really IS For Everyone!

Of course Disney World Parks are geared towards everyone, but many times boys might feel like they are left out with all of the Princesses around. I will say that the Princesses are amazing with the young Princes. They always give them extra attention! For example, while we were at 1900 Park Fare for Cinderella’s Dinner, the Evil Step Sisters were so good with my son. They commented on his muscles and how much “wood he has chopped” recently. Which of course embarrassed him but it was such a great interaction. It’s just not something he looks forward too, he looks forward to the things on this list.

Review: Oga’s Cantina

Oga’s Cantina is a great place to refuel and take a break from the Florida heat. The atmosphere is so much fun with the bar area being interactive with lights, sounds and moving creatures. The music is upbeat and I loved the DJ! He is totally out of this world! I have to say as a robot, DJ knows how to keep the party going. The cast members outfits were right on cue. They truly looked like they stepped right out of the movie. In all my years of visiting Disney World, I have to say that I personally think the Star Wars cast member costumes are the best ones I have seen so far. The Cast Members are also very interactive with guests by singing along and pumping up the crowd during certain songs. So much fun!

Drinks And Snacks

Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks are available at Oga’s Cantina. During our visit, we tried a couple of the non-alcoholic drinks. I had the Cliff Dweller, which consisted of citrus juices, coconut, hibiscus-grenadine & Seagram’s ginger ale and little crunchy ice which I personally love. I really enjoyed this one and can’t wait to have it again. My husband tried the Hyperdrive (punch it) and this one was made with Powerade mountain berry blast, white cranberry juice, black cherry puree and sprite. I took a sip of his and it was OK, but I am not a big Powerade fan and you could really taste it in this one.  

We did not try the snacks on our visit because I have a gluten allergy. The offerings they had available were not gluten friendly at this time. The Cantina only has small snack options. The Disney Dining Plan is not accepted at Oga’s Cantina so if you are planning to experience this amazing location and you are on a dining plan, be prepared to use a different payment method here. Reservations are also highly recommended but they will accept walk ups. However, there is no guarantee you will get in and you could possibly stand in line for a long time just waiting to see. So, make sure to plan and reserve your time before you go by checking My Disney Experience website or app.

 Here are the snack options available:

• Breakfast: Rising Moons Overnight Oats-Oats, Dragon Fruit, Yogurt, and Seasonal Fruit OR Mustafarian Lava Roll, a sweet galactic delight
• Lunch & Dinner: Batuu Bits Crispy Galaxy Snack Bits with Spiced Chermoula Dip

Traveling With Kids

Although we were traveling without kids, we did see many children inside Oga’s Cantina. This is a family friendly location and there are plenty of non-alcoholic choices for kids as well as apple juice and orange juice and small snack options. Keep in mind that this is a loud and high activity location. You may also be standing since seating is not guaranteed. If your little ones are sensitive to noise or get restless standing around this may be an experience to consider for date night or you may want to have some ear protection and a toy or tablet on hand for the kiddos.

Speaking Of Seating At Oga’s Cantina

One thing to keep in mind if you are planning to visit Oga’s Cantina is seating is limited. It is 90% standing room and you will be sharing your space with other travelers. Be prepared to make new friends! We had a standing spot at the end of the bar which was neat because we got to see all of the fun drinks being made right there in front of us. Because the Cantina is enclosed and has low lighting, they did ask for us to keep walking around to a minimum. They do allow you to walk around and explore to take photos, but we had to go one at a time while at least one person stayed at our reserved spot.

I really enjoyed the environment of Oga’s Cantina and we plan to visit this location again to try other drinks. Plus, the atmosphere is so great. We enjoyed chatting with the other travelers around us! If you are thinking about visiting Oga’s Cantina on your next adventure, make sure to get those reservations and keep these other handy tips in mind:

• Visits are limited to 45 minutes per party.
• You should check in no earlier than 15 minutes and your entire party must be present before you can enter.
• Have your identification handy if you are planning on purchasing alcoholic beverages.
• There is a maximum of 2 drinks per Guest.

Star Wars Land Droid Depot

This was an amazing experience for my family and we would definitely recommend it to anyone! When planning your Disney World vacation, if you know that you are going to want to visit the Star Wars Land Droid Depot and build your own droid, it’s recommended that you make your reservations 180 days out. They do allow walk-ins but you may have a long wait depending on how busy it is. I recommend getting the advance reservations by checking your My Disney Experience app or the website.

Entering Star Wars Land Droid Depot

When you enter the Star Wars Land Droid Depot you are greeted by a member of Batuu and taken to pre-pay for your droid. The base cost is $99.99 for each droid with options of upgrading for additional costs.

BB Series or R Series

You have two options, you can build a BB series unit or an R series unit. Once you make your choice and pay you are given a basket with pictures on the bottom. You move on to a conveyor belt with parts for both droids moving past you. There are so many options! All of the parts come in different colors and you can stand there and wait, choosing only the colors you want. Once you have one of every piece you need, you are brought to your work station. This is where your droid comes to life!

A cast member comes over and gives great instructions on how to put your droid together. Once you have built your droid, a cast member comes over and places your droid into an activation unit. Then you are given instructions on how to use the droid and it’s controller. They place your new droid into a box. These boxes are kind of big so if you are staying on resort and have a few days you can actually have them sent to your resort. We chose this option because the boxes are cardboard and if they get wet the handles could fall off. It was an easier option for us then having our two kids carry them around the parks.

During the time we were in the Droid Depot we never once felt rushed. We had our own time at each station and there was no line behind us. The kids got to really take their time and pick each piece slowly. The cast members also took their time to make it an enjoyable experience. They gave very clear directions and explanations. We appreciated the time they took for our group so we could enjoy the entire experience.

Star Wars Land Droid Depot Extra Options

There are extra options to customize your droids too. They offer “personality chips” for $14.99 each that change your droids personality. Meaning your droid can be a smuggler, a part of the First Order or a part of the Resistance. The droids can also communicate with each other. If you bring your new friend into the parks you will notice that your droid will interact with things in the park and it’s surroundings.

My Thoughts

$99.99 may seem like a lot for a souvenir, but honestly you are paying for more than just the droid. You are paying for the experience and it’s totally different from any other experience in Disney World. If you are a Star Wars fan, I highly recommend Star Wars Land Droid Depot.

Tips For Droid Depot

• Valid admission to Disney World’s Hollywood Studios is required.
• The experience area is limited to the builder and one Guest. One person in the party must be age 14 or older.
• Checking In: Guests should check in no earlier than 15 minutes prior to their reservation time at the check-in location in front of Droid Depot. Each person in your party must be present upon check-in and admission to Droid Depot. Late arrivals may not be accommodated. Please be prepared to present your reservation confirmation, photo ID and the credit card provided at the time of booking.

Do you love Hollywood and Vine in Hollywood Studios? Then you are going to LOVE Hollywood and Vine Seasonal Dine: A Disney World Dining Review.

Hollywood and Vine Seasonal Dine

Just about everyone knows about Hollywood and Vine. This “must-do” restaurant is famous for the character meet and greets featuring your favorites from Disney Junior. “Fancy Nancy”, “Doc McStuffins”, “Vampirina”, and “Roadster Racer Goofy”, will visit you while you dine “buffet” style for breakfast! BUT, did you know about the Hollywood and Vine Seasonal Dine?

Things are a little different at dinner time and during lunch! Check it out!

Minnie’s Seasonal Dine

During dinner and lunch, you will be attending “Minnie’s Seasonal Dine”. Minnie “hosts” a fabulous dinner party with four of her closest friends and YOU!! Mickey, Donald, Daisy and Goofy will all be there in their “seasonally finest” outfits, coming around to each table for you to meet and greet! Get those autograph books ready.

When you first arrive, Minnie or one of her friends will greet you and your family with a special photo op! You will then be seated and the fun begins!! I am sure as you are escorted to your table, that you will catch a glimpse of the “dessert bar”. Yes, I said DESSERT BAR! A whole entire section of sweets and complete yumminess! That Minnie KNOWS how to throw a dinner party!

Buffet Style

As I mentioned earlier, this is an all you care to enjoy (buffet style) dinner or lunch. You will find a HUGE and delicious assortment of delectable dishes such as: peel ‘n eat shrimp, spit-fire roasted ham, turkey and tons of “fixin’s”. The menu somewhat changes “seasonally” to accommodate fruits and veggies that are “in” that season. No fear, the lobster mac ‘n cheese is ALWAYS on the buffet! There is also a children’s buffet with all of the things the little ones prefer: chicken nuggets, mac ‘n cheese and more. Children may also eat from the adult buffet and vice versa, making this meal an excellent value.

Please, for the love of Mickey, SAVE ROOM FOR THE DESSERTS. Again, you will definitely want to save a little room, maybe even A LOT of room, for one of the best dessert bars around. In keeping with the “seasonal” theming, you will find some desserts only available at certain times of the year. You will also find some of the most beautifully decorated desserts in Disney World!

Pricing

Minnie’s Seasonal Dining costs $52 per adult and $31 per child, plus tax and gratuity.

• Dining Plans are accepted.
• This will be one table service credit per person in the dining party.
• Please note that if you have a party of 6 or more, an automatic gratuity of 20% will be added.

Disney After Hours Events may be my new favorite offering at Disney World. I recently had the opportunity to attend two Disney After Hours Events at Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom. I know what everyone really wants to know: is it worth it? Keep reading Disney After Hours Events to see if it will be worth it to your family!

Disney After Hours Events

Disney After Hours is a special, ticketed event offers you the chance to explore the Disney World parks after closing. This means low-crowds (and seriously, I mean LOW crowds), a chance to see parks like Hollywood Studios and Animal Kingdom after normal park hours, and as a bonus you get free snacks and drinks during the event. Free ice cream, popcorn, and drinks? Count me in!

What to Expect

With the low crowds you should be able to take your time and really take in the sights and theming around you. Normally during a park day I feel like I have to rush around but the After Hours event allowed me to seriously relax, take my time and get some great pictures while I was at it. I probably have some of the most amazing shots of the Tree of Life ever because I was able to make a full cycle around the park to take pictures up close, far away, and from all angles.

During these events only select attractions are open but some of the most popular rides in all of the Disney parks were included like Avatar Flight of Passage and Slinky Dog Dash. I will say that with the low crowds and super short wait times this opens up the opportunity for you to get to ride these rides multiple times in one night which isn’t always possible during a regular park day. As a side note, Animal Kingdom’s Avatar Flight of Passage is possibly the coolest ride I’ve ever ridden. Slinky Dog Dash is also by far my favorite roller coaster at Disney World’s Hollywood Studios. If you haven’t ridden them you should!! I’m not normally a person who will hang in tough for long wait times, so having the chance to ride these rides with little to no wait time at the After Hours event was perfect for me!

Dining Options

There are limited restaurant options that are open for the After Hours events with food available for purchase. There are also popcorn, ice cream bars (Mickey and fruit bars), and drinks included with your admission. Between the options available and the included snacks, you should be good to go to enjoy your night without going hungry!

What Attractions Are Open?

The main advantage to attending a Disney After Hours Event is having extra time in the parks once everyone has left, but I enjoyed having the opportunity to be in-park a few hours early so that I could still check out some of the things that weren’t going to be available during the After Hours event. Attractions like Kilimanjaro Safaris or Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy were not available for the After Hours events, so it’s important to know that the list of attractions and rides were limited for both Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios.

So Is It Worth It Or NOT?

I think that depends on what you’re looking for out of an event like this. If you want a chance to ride some of the most popular rides in each park multiple times with very low wait times, then these experiences are for you. But if you’re looking for a more comprehensive park experience where you see everything and do everything a park normally has to offer, you’ll probably want to stick with a full-day park ticket to each park. I do like that buying an After Hours ticket means that you have access to the park starting at 7:00 pm the night of the event so a regular park ticket isn’t necessary and you can spend the beginning of the day in a different park using a regular park ticket if you want. However, since this is a special ticketed event you can’t Park Hop from one park to the event since it requires special admission.

Disney After Hours Events Pricing

Disney After Hours was an awesome opportunity for me to hit some of my favorite rides multiple times and to experience new rides too. For the cost of $129 plus tax per ticket, I found that both events were a great deal for me. (Annual Passholders and DVC Members can purchase specially priced tickets for just $95 per adult or child, plus tax!). If purchased in advance, you will save $5.00 off of each ticket.

There are still Disney After Hours dates available for the summer, so be sure and check them out if you can!

If you were brave enough attend the opening day at Galaxy’s Edge, the force was definitely with you! Here is a peek of what it was like and what you can expect!

Opening Day At Galaxy’s Edge

WOW! That is a lot of people and they are all ready to immerse themselves in Galaxy’s Edge at Disney World’s Hollywood Studios. Some were looking for droids to build while others were looking for the famous blue milk. Some were hunting down light sabers and some were standing around in awe! What a sight to see!

Entering Galaxy’s Edge

Welcome to the Planet Batuu! This new land will have everything you need and even some things you didn’t know you needed!

Attractions

Millennium Falcon, Smuggler’s Run opened today, August 29. Star Wars, Rise of the Resistance will open later this year on December 5, 2019. As of right now, no fast passes are available for these attractions.

Dining

We found some delicious dining options in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge! One of our favorites being Oga’s Cantina! You will some pretty amazing drinks such as the Jedi Mind Trick featuring Ketel One Botanical Grapefruit and Rose Vodka, John D. Taylor’s Velvet Falernum, Bols Blue Curaçao, White Grape Juice, Lime Juice, and Grapefruit Bitters. There are also non-alcoholic drinks available.

We also enjoyed Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo, where you will find breakfast, lunch and dinner! A local favorite is Braised Shaak Roast: Cavatelli Pasta, Wilted Kale, Mushrooms. Another fave is the Smoked Kaadu Ribs: Sticky Pork Ribs, Blueberry Corn Muffin, Cabbage Slaw. If you are looking for something a little sweeter, try the Batuu-bon, which is a chocolate cake, with white-chocolate mousse and a coffee custard. OUT OF THIS WORLD!

Merchandise And MORE!

Of course with any new land, there will be new shopping experiences and Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge does not disappoint! There are several new shops to choose from, just according on what you are looking for! Our favorite is the Creature Stall, featuring exotic animals from a galaxy far away!

Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge Guide

In just a few short days, the most anticipated land ever will open in Disney World’s Hollywood Studios. If you are heading to the new galaxy, we are here to help with our Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge Guide.

Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge will make it’s debut at Disney World’s Hollywood Studios on August 29, 2019. It will officially open to the public. Previously, Pass-holders and Cast Members were allowed a little sneak peek.

Park Hours

Here is an updated list of what the park hours will look like for Hollywood Studios!

• Thursday, August 29, 2019: 6:00 am-10:00 pm
• Friday, August 30, 2019: 6:00 am-10:00 pm
• Saturday, August 31, 2019: 6:00 am-10:00 pm

Beginning September 1, the park will offer EXTRA, EXTRA Magic Hours! This will only be available to guests staying on property at a Disney World Resort. Extra, Extra Magic Hours will allow guests three hours (yes, THREE hours) of extra time at Hollywood Studios. Other parks are offering Extra, Extra magic hours as well. Just click that link to find out all of the information! Extra, Extra Magic Hours will be available through November 2, 2019.

Attractions

Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run will debut on opening day (August 29, 2019). Fast passes will not be available until at a later time. There is a height restriction of  38 inches or taller.

Ride in the famous cockpit of the Millennium Falcon on a daring flight—and whether you’re a pilot, engineer or gunner, every role is crucial.

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance will not debut until December 5,2019. This attraction will have a height restriction of 40 inches or taller.

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is a massive, multi-platform, new attraction that is unlike anything you’ve ever experienced at Walt Disney World Resort… or anywhere else in the galaxy!

Dining Options

• Oga’s Cantina-snacks and drinks
• Docking Bay 7-offering breakfast, lunch and dinner
• Milk Stand-offering the famous blue or green milk
• Ronto Roasters-meat stand with grilled sausage and roasted pork wraps
• Kat Saka’s Kettle-Outpost Mix, a sweet, savory snack made with popcorn

The following locations will begin accepting mobile orders starting tomorrow, Sept. 6 in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge: Milk Stand, Ronto Roasters, Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo. Mobile Order does not guarantee entrance into Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.

Lounging At Hollywood Studios

BaseLine Tap House

First up, one of our FAVORITES, BaseLine Tap House. We go here every single time we are at Hollywood Studios. They have a tremendous selection of beer on tap, a few cocktails, and wine. The kids LOVE the the Blue Sky Black Cherry Soda on tap. It’s bottomless, and one time they refilled it so much the bartender went ahead and told them where the bathroom was because “they were going to need it.” Ha! We also get the charcuterie board and pretzel with dipping sauces as well. We are creatures of habit, and this is our order every single time. Our kids are weird, and they’re actually the ones who eat the charcuterie board, and we eat the pretzel.

If you sit along the wall, they have outlets to charge your phone as well (insert all the praise hands). And, they play cover band versions of classic songs and change them to ballads. I know it sounds weird, and some of them are, but I love it all the same. Where else can you hear someone else covering Michael Jackson as elevator music? Nowhere, that’s where.

There are a couple downsides to this lounge: the menu is solely snack foods and the seating in the air conditioning is minimal. You would not want to go here for a meal. When we get our two items to snack on, we have purchased half the options on the menu. There are plenty of seats outside, but if you’re looking for some air conditioning or to charge your phone, you may have to stalk some of the seats inside. If you’re lucky enough to get the big table inside you may could even squeeze in a game of 21 using salt packets as your poker chips like we did.

Here’s a little secret…sometimes Sci Fi Dine In will give away popcorn next door, so you can hop over (there is a door connecting Baseline and Sci Fi) and grab a little cup of FREE popcorn. Score!

Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge

If you’re looking for a more filling option, The Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge has a variety of options from which to choose. They take the best of the best, and make it available outside in the lounge. Pros: You don’t need a reservation. It’s quick. You get a good meal and drinks fast. Cons: It’s outside. In Orlando. Humidity, rain, heat..need I say more? Our family isn’t the best about making reservations for ourselves because we never know where we’re going to end up at dinner time. Insert Hollywood Brown Derby. As long as it’s not the middle of Summer, we have been able to enjoy our meals here in the shade under the umbrellas.

The Famous Hollywood Brown Derby Cobb Salad is fabulous, and the price isn’t bad. The Derby Sliders and Andouille Crusted Shrimp are also worth a try. The kids loved the non-alcoholic selections because they all came with an “ice cube” that changes color. Is it worth $5.99 for Sprite with flavoring and a colored ice cube? Probably not, but at least you get to take the ice cube home (so it can sit in a drawer and not get used-but at least you feel like you got your money’s worth at Disney World).
